I know that "go to the vet" will be an overwhelming response, but from my working for a vet before they do say that if it doesnt look serious or is minor or not causing discomfort to wait a few days and see how it looks. ...

yep ~ get to the vet! *grin*

mouth sores could possibly be signs of stomatitis (aka: "mouth rot") ... + only a vet can tell you for sure ...

the *Major* thing with stomatitis is that it is a secondary infection ~ which means something is going on somewhere else in the ig's body, the infection spread + is now causing sores in the ig's mouth ...

if it *is* stomatitis, the ig should be on oral Baytril ... (iZ was on it almost 3 wks, off a week and his mouth is looking bad again so he'll have to go back on it ... :( )

iZ + i are going thru this right now ~ it is NOT fun for *either* of us ... :(
it SUX! i am *such* a obsessive/paranoid humommy and while me + the vet have *theories*, we don't know for SURE what the underlying problem is/was ...

ok ~

how to clean his mouth?
do NOT use peroxide, not even 1/2 strength!
it damages healthy tissue not to mention IT STINGS! messin' around in your ig's mouth is tricky enough without using something that stings ... :)

dilute betadine:water (1:10) or dilute nolvasen (don't know ratio) ... you can prob'ly use a q-tip to swab it clean or the tip of a washcloth works good for areas where the teeth catch on the q-tip ...

as far as food ~
if he's still eating fine, i wouldn't change anything ... on the other hand, if his appetite drops way off, it could be cuz his mouth IS sore and then smaller pieces or softer food may be appreciated ... (iZ's food looks like baby food right now ...)
