John - so sorry to hear this bizarre behavior has resurfaced! Please keep us posted on his progress and know MANY thoughts are going ya'll's way!
Michelle

: Well, after my post of about two weeks ago, I thought the problem of bug biting his tail was under control. He had only bitten it a couple of times soon after my last post on the subject, and no bites since then.

: Unfortunately, within the last 36 hours, he's made hamburger out of the last 12 inches of tail. His mouth was actually bloody! I believe he will lose about the last inch, and we're trying to save the rest. He's already short about a foot from the last episode of this 2 years ago, and he can't spare a great deal more. Mary and I just finished a traumatic (for Bug and us) tail wrapping session, in which we wrapped the last 18 inches of tail with nexcare Coban, a self-adherent wrap which won't stick to anything other than itself. It is somewhat elastic, and forms a resilient, soft covering which is difficult to get off, even though it isn't stuck to the underlying scales.

: So far this morning, it has been well tolerated, but we'll see what long term use brings.

: The big, unanswered question is: What if we get it healed up, remove the tape, and the biting starts again? A final cure could only be amputation, which we are loathe to consider.

: We realize that there is a root cause, but we have been unable to find it, nor has the vet. At this point, it would seem to be compulsive. I see where Brian has posted on this same problem with his ig. Maybe we'll find a cure, or at least a remedy.

: Until then, we won't give up.... *sigh*

: Sadly,

: JohnT
