Bill,
You didn't list what your friends idea of proper temp.'s and humidity are,so it's a bit hard to speculate. But I incubate my Iguanas eggs at 86 degrees F. and to insure the right humidity levels I start by filling a container with enough vermiculite to half bury the eggs, then I completely fill the container with water and then drain it thoroughly.I then add the eggs, and weigh the whole container.I maintain this weight throughout the incubation period by checking the weight a few times weekly, and adding water to make up for any lost weight. With these conditions, the eggs hatch out after roughly 70 days, and I can tell you...it is VERY "nice" to see them hatch out first hand.
If your freinds followed a similiar method, then it may have been that the eggs needed to have been manually pipped.I follow the development process of the little Iggs inside the eggs,by holding a small flashlight up to the eggs in a darkened room.It sounds to me,by the "Rock Hard" description, that they had been dead a while.Anyways, maybe some of this will shed a light on what may have gone wrong.Best Wishes.
