Alfalfa is not needed. Green beans, snow peas, sugar peas, and butternut squash are all good sources of vegetable protein. Our iguana bug just recently completed a vet checkup which always includes blood panels (which are, in my opinion, what really tell if you're doing it right.) Our vet, who is a highly experienced herp vet, says his blood work is the best she's ever seen, and he's never given alfalfa. All protein is from the sources listed...
