Sure you can use alcohol or peroxide. If it's not that serious a wound you can do nothing about it as well. On occassion, though, it may be necessary to actually seek out medical attention - such as this particular case. If the wound is serious enough to warrant plastic surgery you wouldn't want to go through the pain and expense of the actual operation only to find out that you now have to deal with infection/complications due to either gram positive or negative bacteria, any other form of infection, or even something as "simple" as an iguana tooth dislodging in the wound. Some things, depending on the severity, really just need to be taken care of properly.
