Well it sounds about right... try approaching him slowly and when he is at higher off the ground. Maybe he won't run away, although he still may struggle. The closed eye thing is pretty normal (he thinks you'll go away if he ignores you!... but this is a better reaction than tail whipping and biting) Sleestack is tame but he'll still do the eye closed thing daily! He used to play dead when he was a baby though... go limp and become poseable...he was petrified.
