In Reply to: you're cage is barely big enough for two /more posted by Ig Chick on March 03, 2002 at 11:43:44:
: For two in one cage 2.8" is not deep enough, 8'x8' is fine for the rest of the measurements though. If you are, for whatever reason, going to put three in a cage, you need to rethink your numbers. I would suggest a depth of no less than 4 feet.
Okay. So a cage of 8X4X8 should be enough to house two?
: I know this from experience, not a book. We have an open cage that 2 adult females decided to share ... it's depth is just under 3 feet and barely big enough for them. You also need to make sure that there are enough resources available for everyone in the cage so they do not have to fight for them.
This seems logical to me. I also house monitors and snakes, and the are the same with that offcourse. They need the possibility of privacy from each other and everything. That's why I want a large cage anyway.:)
: As for bringing a 3rd home -you should wait until you have the cage built for starters.
I ask this since my current couple is still young and small (maybe even to small for their age, these two are more or less rescues). I figured, that I would like to get the group used to each other BEFORE the get territorial.
: We suggest that people wait 8 months minimum between making additions of any kind to their "collection". That allows the human in question to make sure this is really the direction they want to go in and don't become overwhelmed by brining home too many new animals at once.
These are not my first herps, and will not be the last. As mentioned I already have monitors and boids. But I do appreciate your concern though.. I have seen it happen as well.. and the results as well...:(
: I'm not going to bother to lecture on housing m/f together -it always seems to fall on deaf ears here anyway.
I know I should keep a spare cage somewhere to seperate the animals in case of a fight... I'm used to that with my monitors... But if it works out, why seperate?
