For two in one cage 2.8" is not deep enough, 8'x8' is fine for the rest of the measurements though. If you are, for whatever reason, going to put three in a cage, you need to rethink your numbers. I would suggest a depth of no less than 4 feet. I know this from experience, not a book. We have an open cage that 2 adult females decided to share ... it's depth is just under 3 feet and barely big enough for them. You also need to make sure that there are enough resources available for everyone in the cage so they do not have to fight for them.
As for bringing a 3rd home -you should wait until you have the cage built for starters. We suggest that people wait 8 months minimum between making additions of any kind to their "collection". That allows the human in question to make sure this is really the direction they want to go in and don't become overwhelmed by brining home too many new animals at once.
I'm not going to bother to lecture on housing m/f together -it always seems to fall on deaf ears here anyway.
