Well I started coming here a couple year ago. I got Lizzy about 3 1/2 years ago.
Her first home was an aquarium with lighting, vines, barks that were treated. As she grew so did the size of her home. next to a 50 gallon and now currnelty in a much larger cage that I purchased on line with light fixture and lights.
Added more larger barks, treated of course and vines etc. She was happy in this home.
This time last year she laid 13 eggs, I was over joyed. I came here for advise and many people were happy to help.
Here comes the sad and the part where I learned i was making mistakes and big ones.
She is not eating, okay same time as last year time for egg laying. Fix her egg box and think I am getting her comfy for her time, wrong.
Seems the lighting, and yes I did research but apparently not enough was incorrect. The calcium I was usuin was useless as well.
Off to the vet we go as she laid two eggs and no more, she was lethargic and her color was not right.
Lizzy was at an exoctic vet her in Chicago, luckily I live in a big city and vets are easier to find for Iguana's.
Her stayed lasted 8 days, in this time she laid over 30 eggs.
I had incorrect lighting for one thing, not so say the people where I purchased all the supplies. And as for the calcium well it'swhat they use for their reptiles.
Yes I printed MK's pages and thought I was doing right.
Happy to say that Lizzy is home, she is on antibiotics, liquid calcium and also a luquid form of food, this she gets once a day. She is bathed by me everynight at which time she poops and enjoys her swim.
She is eating soild foods now and is still confined to the lower level of her cage for now.
Next vet visit one month from now.
I am posting this as I never felt I could before, this happened so recently and I have been so down on myself over this. My ignorance could have lost my Lizzy's life.
Happy to report, old lighting gone and replaced with correct ones, thanks to the wonderful vet and all her help. She has a male ig about 5 feet long and he is happy and very healthy.
Reason to post now, I see many people asking questions, just like I did and I hope that someone will read this and see that you can make errors and cause your ig's to suffer.
I also have to add that i had her diet well under control, maybe one thing I was doing right. I had to buy an extra heater for the room she is in in the winter, a humidifier for the room also.
Next is a bigger cage when she is more able to climb around. She is well on her way to be a beautiful green female ig, and one I hope I will have for many more years to come.
Okay got that off my chest.
