damaged tail!

this morning when i was feeding and playing with Gandoff, i noticed his tail was slightly bent in the middle. on looking at it closer, it seems to be fairly deep cut ont the bottom, with something skinny and floppy sticking out of it about a half inch. it is not skin or bone, but thats all i know. (it has since dried up when i checked this afternoon) he still has feeling at the end of his tail, and there was not much blood, just what looks like a scab. i was thinking that what was sticking out was what becomes the regrown tail? just speculation. what should i do about his tail besides clean it with hydrogen peroxide? should it be broken off? i'm worried about infection more than anything. help?
