Well spending time with him will help tame him... just make sure you talk quietly and treat him gently. Soon he will realize you are not a predator. If you grab him from above he will be more scared.

As far as the closing eye thing...this is not really a sign of enjoyment most of the time. Pay close attention and you will see what I mean. Mine does it to this day, although the meaning has changed over the years. At first he was petrified when he did it...."I can't see you so you can't see me!" Now he does it because usually I will go away after petting him and in his mind his technique works! It makes me disappear eventually. I don't worry about it too much because the eye closing thing is better than a whipping/biting frenzy (which he never does). He has his hyper moments but is never violent.

As far as the vet, you can ask questions about diet, lighting, and general care (act like you don't know and see what advice you get....good way to test his knowledge) You can also check out the link below for a list of good herp vets. Recommendations are always good. You can ask how much experience with iguanas they have but I find that many of them may not be 100% truthful.

Take a fresh stool sample with you and have it checked for worms/parasites.
