It's amazing how quickly you get "accustomed" to dealing with this crap....Normal for us is missing at least a third of a tail - One of the three we took on Thursday was missing roughly 3/4 of his tail - but he DID come complete with an old, dirty make-shft bandage wrapped around it. Second one has what looks like old thermal burn scarring wrapping around the entire tail. Hatchling appears healthy. Mites didn't seem to settle in on any of them fortunately. And NONE of them seem to quite know what to make of fresh food....Glad you guys are out there doing what you do - if we can ever do anything to help holler...
Now, far be it from me to make this into any sort of contest because we could easily hit numbers well into the thousands (unfortunately) between both of us - and that would be if we limited it to igs alone...., but we were finally able to slow down long enough to do an "official" head count from Thursday. Grand total - ............ 61 animals that we took. Mammal shelter took another 45+.... Everything from Anoles to Burms to monitors.
Got the necropsy report back on the baby Nile that passed the other night - nothing too out of the ordinary but what caught my eye as well as that of our vet is that 9 hours post mortem, even after refrigeration, there were STILL living parasites in the soft tissue. That kind of creeps me out a bit - to use a technical term.... Fortunately, the baby was kept isolated in a tank so it may be an isolated incident... I'm keeping my fingers crossed....
If anyone knows any wealthy herp nuts feel free to send them our way. At last count we were up to a total of 35 mv bulbs and fixtures on the "wish list" and that's if we split them between some tanks... Trust me, you don't want to see the REST of the list.
