I dont think that they are illegal BECAUSE of samonella, I think that they are illegal becuase of the ignorance and uneducation surrounding herps and samonella. Yes, I know that 100% of heprs potentially carry samonella, and I know the precautions to take to ensure that me and my family do not contract it, unfortunetly some individuals care not to educate themselves on the subject and therefore, because of ignorance they endanger themselves and those around them. As well, they destroy the potential for responsible owners such as yourself to aquire and own these wonderful herps.. that is all that Im trying to say...
I was just recently (6 days ago) released from my job at superpet (a division of PJs pet centeres) because of differences of opinion surrounding the care and sales of herps. During my 2 1/2 months there 2 iggys were dropped off, not wanted anymore, and then resold immedietly w/o a vet check or ANYTHING and the store also sold 8-10 babies. Last I knew, more are on their way from a supplier. PJS in west ed. also makes sure to maintain a constant supply of baby and adult iguanas to sell. Its very sad...
And its not even going to stop with educating people, both of the iggys were brought back in horrible shape. "He is getting too big and mean" they say.. When asked if they were advised on the size and temperment of adult iguanas when they first bought it, both replied along the lines of "Yes we were told BUT HE WAS SO CUTE and my kid/girlfriend thought it would be cool to own a baby, but now that hes older were done with him, here ya go take him back."
Its not lack of education in this example, its lack of brain cells on the customers part. The store gets what it wants ($49.95), the customer gets what it wants (a cute baby until theyre 'done' with it), the iguana trade gets what it wants (business) but unfortunetly its the iguana that suffers...
