wade,
Your friends Iguana sounds as though it is suffering from one of two things.Either it is an infection in his mouth, with would mean draining the abcess,or it has MBD.I would lean more towards the idea of MBD,because it is very common.I should rephrase that and say,MBD is very common in captive Iguanas.MBD is a crippling disease that if not corrected can lead to the demise of the Iguana.MBD is due to improper diet and insufficiant ultra violet rays needed to process and regulate the calcium breakdown in an Iguana.Usually the first step to correcting this problem is to get the Iguana into the sun...direct sunlight.Sometimes as an alternative you can try using those UV flourescent lights,be sure to keep them within 12 inches of the Iguana...but there really is no substitute for the sun.The calcium to phosphorous ratio must also be rectified in the Iguanas diet.Because the Iguana is already showing signs of MBD(if indeed it is this)there is a serious need for calcium...extra calcium to stabalize the body's lack of it.
I share your opinion, that this animal needs a Vet,there are many injections that they can administer to aid in relief, and they can also help clear up the mystery of what's wrong with the animal.Don't let your friend leave the animals fate to chance!Good Luck.
