The longer you let it go, the worse it will become -- since he will be bigger and stronger.
They are afraid when you reach in -- and react with teeth and tail. It took me almost six months to tame mine. Mine now free roams in a room and I definitely think this makes a difference. What helped me -- I bought a small baby cover at K-mart for 5.99 (real soft one which Max still sleeps with) and reached in with that to pick him up. Cover his body with it and he will be biting at the cover and he can't whip his tail. That's what I did and mine got used to it when he realized I was bringing him out and he wasn't getting hurt.
