I agree with all your points - but I also believe that pet store owners have that same responsibility as temporary "owners."
: I've seen quite a few of these posts complaining about the lack of education delivered when a reptile is sold to an uneducated customer. While I agree that the situation is unfortunate, I can't excuse owners who allow their animals to become seriously ill due to simple ignorance. There is a vast body of information readily available. I'm not simply referring to the internet. There are plenty of very good books available and just about any basic care guide would suffice. When a person elects to acquire any animal, they immediately become responsible for that creature's every need. How many people do you know that bring a new child home from the hospital without doing a little homework? In this day and age, "I didn't know" simply isn't a viable excuse. If you don't care enough to try to learn as much as possible about the optimum care of an animal in your charge, you really have no business with it in the first place. Fifteen or twenty years ago when not as much was known and what little information that did exist was not always readily available, I might have accepted the ignorance plea. Anymore I just don't buy it. Sorry to sound crude. Just my two cents.
