In Reply to: spikes falling off??? posted by Matt on January 09, 2002 at 12:16:35:
: Hey again everyone i just joined the forum. I have an iggy my first probably out of many. She was a rescue well i got her from a rescue and her spikes are falling off. She is in shed now. She is only about 1 foot long and 2 years old very stunted growth. And one suggestion was that it was what happened when the spikes get strangled by shedding skin. At first i thought it may be dehydration but i am now not sure of anything. She is also eating great. Please anyone with any knowledge on this whatsoever help me. Anything would be greatly appreciated.
Are they falling off totally? I know when mine sheds, I can pick off the spikes one at a time (only the shed) and the "original" spike is still underneath. If it was because of old skin, make sure it's all off. Bathe your iguana (every day if you can) and use a soft bath puffy (one of those net things humans use) and go gently down the spikes. This helps keep the skin moist and loosened so shedding is easier. Keep an eye on the claws for dried skin that didn't come off or it could strangle the toe and the ig could lose it.
When you see the spikes start to shed, you can rub your fingers down the spine and gently try to lift off. The ones that are ready come off right away. If you can't, let it go for a day or so.
I like picking those off and my ig does too, because he can't get at them.
