Don't give up on him. It will take time to earn his trust...anywhere from a couple months up to a year. First make sure he is healthy... take a fresh fecal sample in to the vet & get some blood work done. This should be done once per year anyway. A sick iguana will sometimes be mean.

Make sure you have a heat lamp and UV lamp for proper calcium absorbtion-- feed him nutritious foods like collards, mustards, dandelion, escarole/endive, watercress, squash, a little fruit (mango, berries, melon) Variety is the key.

For taming, spend short periods of time with him several times per day... give him his favorite treats by hand. Let him associate you with pleasant experiences. Talk softly. Let him adjust to his cage and your new environment (perhaps not touching him too much for a week) then hold him for short periods, give him warm baths etc. The bathroom is a good place for taming since it is small and generally quiet and not cluttered. If he escapes you can catch him and he may feel safer in there. Where gloves if you need to or use a towel. Pick him up from underneath and support him with 2 hands. Don't come at him from overhead or he will feel threatened.

Check his femoral pores on his hind legs to see if he is male (males have bigger ones). Post a photo of him and maybe we can guess from his other features.

Good luck and don't give up.. he may take awhile since he was so neglected.
