: : : i recently received a pet iguana and have no idea how to take care of it..i own a heat rock ,cage and lamp but dont know the details..can someone please give me Melissa Kaplan's web page address or give me some helpful hints on grooming and stuff. thanks

: : Good to see that you are looking for information, that tells
: : me that you are concerned about the animal, and that is
: : absolutly wonderful.

: : Well...first get rid of the heat rock, it's dangerous.
: : Mellisa Kaplan's page is www.sonic.net/~melissk/ig_care.html.
:regardless of what this person below me says, HEAT ROCKS SHOULD NEVER BE USED!!! they don`t provide the correct type of heat this animal needs. iguanas warm thier body by RADIANT heat, meaning the heat from the sun, not from a rock beneath them. besides that, heat rocks have also shown to cause some digestive trouble becuase it heats up the hind gut and causes fermentation of the food stored there. that, along with the fact that it can cause seriuos burns should be plenty of reason to not use heat rocks for iguanas
:
: Heat rocks are only dangerous if they are too hot, It;s easy to tell if they are. use your own hand, If you can't keep your hand on the rock for a while because it gets too hot, you have a problem, you can however buy a heat rock temperature controller. you plug the heat rock in to this and there is a dial that you can use to adjust the temperature, some heat rocks come with these already attached.

:
: Also make sure you have a UV light. it'll die without one.
: it should have not only a uv producing light, but also a UVB producing Flourescent bulb, such as one from vitalight or zoomed
