I know we have all seen stupid pet store behavior, but as this is my first time ranting on the list about it, I'll indulge myself :)
Yesterday I went to the local pet store to pick up an order of crickets for my waterdragon. There was a big new tank right beside the back door that had a huge sign reading "WILD CAUGHT Iguana" containing a juvenile (approx 9 in. SNV). And inside his tank was a big bowl brimming with crickets and mealworms. I politely mentioned to the young salesman fetching my crickets that iguanas are vegetarians, whereupon he informed me just as politely that that was for "captive bred" iguanas. Wild ones and especially juveniles only eat insects. Before I could open my mouth, he added that they had offered the ig lettuce, but he refused to eat it, so now they only gave him insects. He then disappeared into the storeroom leaving me with my mouth open in the back of the store.
Why, when they also carry copies of Iguanas for Dummies and other care books, do some pet stores not bother to take the time to find out basic care? I understand that their main function is to make $$, and that many of the staff are kids earning wages to buy CD's rather than interested herpers, but would it be sooo difficult for the manager to flip through one of the manuals to see what sort of nutrition they need to provide and then instruct the staff accordingly?
Sigh. I'd like to boycott them, but they are the only bulk supplier of crickets in my neighbourhood.
