In your post, you stated,
"why'd you all buy the things in the first place?"
In many cases, mine included, we didn't. I've been interested in iguanas for almost 10 years, but never owned one because my wife and I didn't want to buy one. Eventually, one came along that needed us, so that's why we have him.
And Bug (his name) is expensive, difficult to care for, and all the other negatives you've seen on this board concerning ownership. All of thise things are not fun.
Now, having said that, the question is, why? Well, there are compensations. There's a sense of fulfillment knowing you're getting it right, and the animal is thriving, when it's future was so bleak. (And the future is bleak for the vast majority in this country, save the lucky few) And, any one that says reptiles have no personality just doesn't get it. Even though we've both been bitten, and tail thwacked a few times, it's usually our fault. Bug is a joy to be around, just to watch his antics. He's very much his own man. Just seeing him chow down on his salad with great relish is a pleasure.
Sure, he'll never bring my newspaper and slippers, and he's not too cuddly, but, after all, how many people get to spend part of thier lives with a dragon?
The most fun of ownership, however, comes when he stretches, and the wings come out of the shoulder skin folds, even for a split second. Hard to catch a glimpse of, but beautiful....

JohnT
