In Reply to: Do regular incandescent bulbs used in homes give off UVA? posted by newbie on December 06, 2001 at 21:40:04:
In answer to your question no. There are no bulbs available from any plant store, hardware or other general supply store that gives off UVB light in any (if any) significant amounts. Your next best choice is a ReptiSun 5.0 flourescent from LLL or some other online supplier for around 18 to 20 dollars each - which is about as cheap as you can get them - you will of course need to install a fixture to hold the bulb(s) - a lot of people use two bulbs.
The next best after a Reptisun 5.0 is a combo UVB Heat Bulb which runs around 50 dollars each - which is good for UVB and heat during daylight hours- you will need a ceramic for night time. The literature suggestes that the UVB Heat Bulbs put out a good amount of UVB, as compared to Flourescents, and continue to do so for a longer period of time. You will need a ceramic fixture for the bulb and you will have to decide which wattage is appropriate for your enclosure. I am sure some others on the forum can fill in this info. Good luck. Cliff W.
