they will pay for permits:
permits will/could eventually lead to non-keeping or more restrictive laws. I don't know how many of you know this yet but certain cities that has have out breaks of salmonella from contact of iguanas are looking into the possibility of banning iguanas from city/states. In fact the center for disease control has made comments on this subject. Could it be a matter of time ?
To next poster:
Iguanas are part of the south Florida and east Texas fauna at this time. Some of us has been over the "AKC" thing before where it didn't and doesn't work on other pets as a whole. Even if you add the Lacey act there are still loop-holes. Like captive breeding being not captive breeding and false documentation of point of origin. This HAS been the case with "farm" raised iguanas, boas. and ball pythons already.
I keep asking the question of how many of you actually know any breeders of iguana iguanas in this country ?
I'm not dis-agreeing with some of your ideas, posters, but I'm speaking of the REAL world out there. I DO have a real problem when someone attacks the retail pet store on the selling and or keeping animals for sale that are kept sub-standard, sick, too young, etc. and ends up buying these animals to save them. (the animal).
We have been over this on the tortoise forum that when people buys an animal (one of the cases in point was Petco selling the russian tortoises) with the scenario mentioned above you just made a purchase that adds to a tally of sales for that store and shows on the books to the corporate office. IT'S A SALE TO THEM and might promote more of this thing to happen since there is no explaination other than being a sale. Now I heard (I was one that sent letters,e-mails) that some of the mass merchant retail chains says that they are/will reframe from selling some exotics forms of reptiles at this time. But this will not go the same way on the small private owned sectore of reatil stores. You got to resist from buying these animals in this condition no matter. Voice why you won't buy this aniaml. If the sales are not made and the reasons are given then the stores may give it up. Unless they are brain dead owners that don't care and I DO have one retail store that appears to have this problem !
I'm in total thought that some thing should be done BUT not necessarily in the thoughts of ways as some of you.

: I have a thought...if there were enough support, we could push the legislation to add Iguana iguana to the Lacey Act of 1900 and prohibit further importation into the US from the wild, added as a "potential injurious species" to native fauna. Although they can only live in subtropical climates in the wild and wouldn't apply to most of the U.S. as an "injurious species", this would at least keep pet stocks bred by licensed breeders, deter low-brow pet stores from selling them, and ensure quality care with documentation to prove it...kind of like AKC papers for dogs & cats? I dunno..just a thought...many downsides, of course like possible inbreeding, etc...like I said, just a thought, maybe others have better ideas. Take care all.

: If a RESPONSIBLE adult wants any animal bad enough, and can provide a proper home, they will pay for the permits. If they can't afford it, then they can doubtfullly afford to keep an adult iguana healthy.
