My Herp vet was actually recommended to me by the vet who sees my dogs--he won't touch reptiles, himself. Anyway, I did some research first in the form of calling different vets asking about their services. I began the search shortly after purchasing my first iguana (though, I'd had many herps in the past). Because a fair number of iguanas were being wild caught at the time, I wanted my new pet examined for parasites and other ailments not normally seen on CB specimens. I simply called vets asking about having a newly purchased pet iguana examined. I found out very quickly who regularly handled reptiles and who did not. True Herp vets generally will have a battery of tests and an exam regimen already established for this situation and will be happy to discuss it with you. Through this process I found the herp vet recommended by my regualar vet to be friendly and qualified.
The first visit sealed the deal for me. The vet and her assistants were all experienced and knowledgeable about reptiles. I was further comforted to see several other iguanas and other reptiles receiving treatment that day--this was obviously not a side business for her.
I've been going to this vet for about 5 years now although only occasionally and not in awhile because my now adult male iguana can be difficult to move, as you might imagine. ;) All-in-all find a vet that will have patience for your questions and hopefully one that regualarly treats herps--thats the best endorsement of all.
Good Luck!
