After last year's egging season and how stressful it was for all of us in this house, we now leave a nesting box out year round for Mel. The funny thing is, she never used it to lay her eggs -she would lay them on her shelf and then lift her tail and wait for Mr. D to come collect the egg, she wouldn't let anyone else do it. Well, I shouldn't say that, she laid some of her eggs at the vet's office and she allowed him to get them out of her way. Her eggs are in my freezer now -I've been trying to get around to photographing them.

Our nesting box was incorperated into the design of her house. We built a small box that opens to the enclosure but is solid on the side -this gives her some privacy should she decide she wants it. We filled a box (similar to a kitty litter pan) with a mixture of plain dirt (no additives, chemical or otherwise) that we purchased at the garden shop and play box sand. We keep the mixture moist but not soaking wet with warm water. During breeding season, we kept the whole works warm with a heating pad placed under the box. This year though I am contemplating installing a small radiant heat panel in the actual structure since it does have a top to it. We change the medium every few months as a rule. Lately though, she has taken to using it as a toilet so we have had to change it more often.

Our vet suggested another good way to build a nesting box. Take an outside (new of course, not used) garbage can and cut an entry in the bottom just large enough for her to get in. He also suggested the mixture of sand and dirt with water. To keep it warm enough for her -he suggested a heating pad under the can. Don't know how well this works, we never tried it.
