The PowerSun bulbs have a shorter neck on them which allows them to fit inside a 10 inch ceramic dowe with no problem. The old Active bulb does not fit inside a dome and you have to add feet to the fixture if you want the bulb to sit on top of somehting (like hardware cloth). I haven't seen the new version of the Active that T-Rex is putting out but I have heard that they also have shortened the neck. We have 1 PowerSun, I have to say that design wise we like it better than the Active, unfortunatly it only comes in a 160 flood.
The other difference, like I alluded to above, is that the Powersun only comes in one wattage and only in the flood style. Active bulbs come in several wattages and in both flood and spot.
As for the mrecury vapor bulbs not directly marketed to the reptile community, keeping in mind that I personally have no tested them with a radiometer, we have been told that they do not push the same levels of UV as those bulbs marketed expressly for the reptile community. This comes from a reliable source that I trust very much. I do know that it is possible for different mercury vapor lights to have different levels of UVB. It can even vary from bulb to bulb from the same manufacturer.
Until we are able to test bulbs ourselves, we will be sticking with either the Active bulbs or the Powersuns which have already been testes. If memory serves me right, you can buy an Active for $39.00 from www.beanfarm.com
