my igs scared of me

how do i make my ig tame? he is not vicious, but ocassionaly he will run away from me and he wont let me pick him up without a fight(with me usually being the loser, i have the scars to prove it). currently he spends most of his time in his cage because i am affraid that if he gets loose he'll just keep running away from me. oh yeah one more little question, do you guys/girls clip your ig's claws? thanks for any help in advance!
