I was lucky and had a knowledgable vet recommended by a friend. I also know both the vets in the office are ARAV members, also their office has had a booth providing information at a couple of area reptile shows, which indicates to me that they are both well informed and also interested in educating the public about reptiles. On my first visit the vet asked me lots of questions to make sure I knew what I was doing as far as light, heat, food etc, which gave me confidence in him. We agreed about most things - one piece of advice he gave me was that in his opinion vitamin and mineral supplementation was unnecessary, given a nutritious diet and sufficient uv, and potentially risky - that was just his opinion; he said he had seen more problems from oversupplementation. Sorry to digress, I guess my point was that I had a good feeling about the vet because he was well informed on herp issues and had obviously had experience treating reptiles. So, my advice is take your herp for a checkup NOW, before it's ill, and make sure you have a vet you would trust with a sick animal.
