Hi!
I think I got salmonella once from my igs. They were free raoming at that time. It was two years ago. I was sick like never before over 3-4 days but recovered without any treatment.
If your igs feces somehow gets onto your fingers direct or indirect and you dont wash them after handling your ig or its enclosure/potty it could mean problems. Later maybe you make a sandwich for yourself and something you cant really see gets attached to the sandwich. Then you eat it. If you are unlucky you get very sick after 12 hours or so. Many iguanas carry salmonella. Maybe a majority of them. Thats what I have understood.
Salmonella doesnt live very long outside the iguanas stool or body. As the stool dries up the bacteria probably soon starts dying.
Young juvenile iguanas eats fecal matter from older iguanas to build up good bacteria in its gut to break down food but also gets salmonella from them by doing this.
This is what I beleive.
