In Reply to: Water shoots to prevent future kidney problems ?! posted by Hakan on October 30, 2001 at 16:09:16:
: Hi there!
: Important note on water, when Liz and Rex reached an age of 4 1/2 years I started force feeding my iguanas 10 ml water two times per week using a syringe (without needle) shooting water direct into their throat. I did this because it is known that older iguanas often dies because of kidney problems and one possible cause to this is dehydration by not getting enough water from humidity and food. As I started to notice that my own iguanas where releasing decreasing amounts of urine I took this quite unique decision to prevent possible future problems.
: Any comments on this?

I've also read captive igs don't get enough liquid. I always have a large container of water at my ig's basking spot and keep most of his greens in a pitcher of water (hoping the veggies will "inhale" some extra). Before I did that, they would become limp and dry out in no time. So, when I get them home from the market, I cut the bottoms and stand them in a pitcher of water and wrap the ones that can't do that. When I give it to my iguana to eat, I usually rinse the greens under water again and lay them (whole) in a rectangular container of water. I figured with all that, hopefully he was getting more liquid.
