Ig Tail ....Help?

I have seen her shed spikes before, and occasionally lose one or 2.
This is different-
The spikes have degenerated- if you look at her tail, you see a clean line of spikes going up and down, untill you get to the 1 inch area in the middle of the tail.
Then the spikes are NOT protruding up, like they have been filed down or something.
Then after that inch, the spikes are normal again, protruding up out of the tail.
Maybe she wacked it real hard on something causing the problem, but that doesn't make sense either- because she swings her tail side to side, not up and down.
I see 2 possibilities,
she got her tail caught somewhere, and damaged only her spikes in this 1 inch area (seems to me there would be more damage, if her tail got caught this hard... or
has some wierd fungus, rot or something....
