DVL raises an interesting point ... sooooo many people critisizing HSUS but how many of you have bothed to contact your regional offices and tell them your complaints? Believe it or not, HSUS wants the same things that most of us responsible "herpers" want and that is to preserv and protect reptiles and uneducated humans. They are just approaching the topic from a different angle and believe it or not, they have many members who do not agree with their tactics.
I have questioned the CDC report as well, the difference is, I have a copy and know exactly what it is I am questioning. I'm not trying to jump on anyone here but I suggest that any of you who are interested in dealing with these issues in a constructive manner take the time to become educated on the whole story and not just bits and pieces that are presented by third parties here on the net (no offense to you intended Samcin).
There are much larger issues at hand than the sweeping generalizations presented on the net. I received a complete package from HSUS and their main concerns are reptiles being given away as prizes at fairs and reptiles/amphibians forced to participate in contests where uneducated humans are present. Try to remember that in the world of politics, you always ask for more than you want in the hopes of getting what you need. In other words, they have worded their requests in such a way as to gain as much attention as possible from politicians.
Those interested parties may want to contact their local Senators and Representatives, I have a list of animal friendly politicians if you need the contact info for your state.
