Hi, Kiwi had her operation about 15 months ago. The first year she laid after much work in preparing a suitable site. The next year she reabsorbed which can be quite dangerous although I have heard of some that do it year after year. The next she was spayed. I was in close consultation with my vet during this entire time. We discussed the pros and cons all along. It was our hope that she would not produce every year. He was unwilling to do the operation unless we felt she had developed eggs. This is because of the difficulty involved in locating and working with the reproductive tract and under developed eggs (follicles). It is very small. I have heard of some vets in Ca. doing the procedure in non-gravid Igs using equipment designed for eye surgery. Post-op care is pretty easy as long as no complications are present. Try to keep them quite. No climbing, jumping, or baths for a while. Mine took a jump of about 5' and went spat in the floor about a week after hers. I was very relieved when no harm was done. She started eating after a couple of days. Shedding around the scar area must be watched until it completely heals. There is a very nasty scar for some time. I think hers started looking much better after about 6 months. They should be back to a normal routine in about 6 weeks. There has been little or no difference in behavior since the operation. This is major surgery and should not be taken lightly. As is all operations of this type a general anesthetic is used which is dangerous. The incision is made very close to the Ventral vein. A slip of the knife or a misjudged incision is major trouble. It is also an expensive operation. I have heard of vets charging up to $900 but around $400 more commonly. A final consideration is the relationship you have with your vet. I my case it is very good and we consider each other as friends as well as client-doctor. I hope this helped some and if you have any other questions I will try to help. Good Luck & Happy Herping, Iguana03
