: Cirsisue, I think you've been really lucky that your gal hasn't laid eggs since reaching the age in which she could do so. I've known a few people who have lost their female igs due to egg problems. (Ex. friend's ig somehow managed to not lay all her eggs & she got sicker & sicker and no one could figure out why....it wasn't until her death did they realize she was being poisoned by the unlaid eggs.) Our female suffered a prolapse this summer while trying to lay her eggs. (She'd laid an infertile batch the yr. before as her 1st clutch.) She had to be held o/night at the emergency vet and then we took her to reg. vet the next a.m. The only way to save her was to do the ovariectomy. The vet told us later that he was glad he'd done it because there were eggs loose in her abdominal cavity due to the prolapse and they would have eventually poisoned her. Our bill was nearly $700 but this included the emergency care & 4 days of boarding, lab wk, x-rays, etc. I think the actual operation was about $400. It's very, very expensive. But IMHO if you don't plan to breed her and you can manage the expense, it is a good thing to do if only to give you peace of mind.
Thanks iguanamoma, I dd lose my first ig to that very problem. They took 70(that's right 70) eggs from her and did the oviaiectomy and she made it thru the operation, but was too weak to ake it thru the night.I still cry when I thnk of what she went thru. It's been 8yr since I lost her and she was truly a wonderous girl.I don't and won't go thru that again and I know how lucky I've been with my Cirsis so money does count but not with y kids.Thank you as I told everyone ,I'll keep you posted.
