I'm curious, Nanci. Exactly where on your other board does it make this recommendation?

Although there have not been any studies done as far as acceptable amounts of UVA and B absorption or exposure (to the best of my knowledge) I have to disagree strongly with the idea that if an iguana receives adequate amounts of UV in the summer there is no need for UV in the winter. Also, if one were to subscribe to the idea that one half hour of natural exposure per day is enough there are flaws in that theory as well. What time of day is there the greatest amount of UV available in your area? What if it's cloudy that day? What if it rains and there is minimal UV exposure? In the wild, iguanas don't need to be concerned about this simply because they are exposed to natural sunlight all day EVERY day. In captivity, it is a different story. As of right now, there is still no artificial method of reproducing naturally occuring levels of UV exposure available to the public. There most lilkely never will be either. God knows that John and Jane Q Public wouldn't know what to do with it anyway on their own and there would most likely only be average success in attempting to educuate them on how to correctly use it.

Following this kind of thought, an iguana would not be able to adequately produce D3 for however long "winter" lasts - 3 months, 5 months, 6 months. This being the case, an iguana's body would begin the process of degeneration into MBD every winter. That sort of degeneration and recovery is in no way healthy for ANY kind of animal - humans included. It also does nothing to assist in allowing skeletal structure to further strengthen as it would be in a constant cycle of "rob and replace".

Bottom line, I would definitely not recommend this course of husbandry at all.
