Thats a great idea, I did the same thing with my cage, albeit it is a *little* smaller. I built the wooden frame (like you mentioned), and on one half of the opening (where the doors were) I put a door (just the frame), and secured plastic mesh to it with a staple gun.
On the other half I put up a large piece of plexiglass, but had it cut slightly shorter than the total height of the cage so that their would be a little space underneath. The opening is where I remove the cement tub (filled with water) daily, which is where my iguana defecates in.
Overall it turned out to be an incredibly cheap (and perhaps better if you have a closet that you don't use) alternative to a regular enclosure of the same size.
