Although I'm no expert, I can tell you that a closet thats built into your home is probablt insulated and will retain the heat really well. My enclosure is ssignificantly smaller than you closet and to keep the air temp at 80 degrees with a 90 degree basking spot I have two lampd...a 75 watt and a 60 watt. He has a third lamp that i only use at night with a 60 watt nightlight that keeps his sleeping area at 75-80 degrees. That being said, i think a 100 watt heat lamp near the basking spot might be enough to keep the closet warm. And if you are going to use the humidifier, that will also keep the air temp warm. I use a catliter pan with water, and a fish tank bubble with my second lamp pointing at it for humidity. Works well for me. I dont know where you live but if heat is important, than I wouldnt suggest using a screen door because the heat would escape. I use plexi and it holds the heat well, although glass is the best wayy to go. HomeDepot sells a sheet of plexi 6' high by 4' wide for like $25. Mount that onto a frame and "whala" theres your door. As far as the wood is concerned, as long as you stain or paint it (or both) you shouldnt have a problem with it. I find more problems with carpet and that green turf stuff because bugs and germs WILL live in the weaves...this is proven. But they cant get into coated wood. You could see freddy's enclosure on his site. There is a link on the bottom of his pics page.
: I was about to build Hoss' enclosure the other day when I had a bright idea. I have this closet that I rarely use which is 7' high, 5 foot wide, and 5 feet deep. Now this closet has those sliding doors which roll on a track. I figured I could build a wood frame door similiar to that one and cover it with mesh and then put it back where the original door, and Whala I have a huge ig enclosure! It has a shelf about 6' off the floor that I figured to be the basking spot, and then I thought I'd buile 2-3 shelfs alternating the height as I went to the ground. I thought I would buy a discarded section of carpet from the carpet store to put overtop of my new carpet, and build rope ladders, and I'll still trying to figure out what to use to connect shelf to shelf...I want to avoid as much porous wood products as possible....I was also thinking that this would fit one of those fake 4-5 foot trees which would simulate a natural enviroment and would also fit a humidifier which I could place on low. The only questions I have are on heating this closet, where to put the food (top or bottom) and uvb lighting (is 1 bulb on the basking shelf sufficient or do I need more)....I think this is a great idea as Hoss and I both benefit...He has a huge enclosure, and this saves me big $$$$ that I don't have....Let me know what you think or your comments or whatever .....THANKS..GOD BLESS THE USA!!!!!!!
