Dear Friends,
By the looks of our mailbox this week, most of you know that while we live in New Hampshire, we work in Boston. Let me assure you that we are fine, the reason we have not answered any emails is that we have been working 17-hour days all this week. Yes, I said working and that is why I am composing this letter.
The purpose of terrorism is to cause chaos, fear and confusion, to alter the course of daily action. We refuse to allow the faceless cowards who perpetrated these shameful and horrendous crimes against America to further affect the lives of us as Americans. While Mr. D and I certainly mourn for the thousands of people who have suffered directly as a result of Monday’s attacks, we feel that the best way we can honor their memory is to continue to support the economy of America and go on with our lives showing the terrorists that while they may have caused damage they have not stopped us or shaken our faith in our country.
While writing this I have learned that we know at least 7 people directly touched by the events in NYC, four of whom are still missing and one, a fireman who is related to me is okay and still working away in the wreckage. My niece gained early acceptance into the Navy and was due to start a week after she graduates this school year. I have just learned that if we go to war, she can be called and rushed through boot camp. The potentail for her to be placed on a bomber if this happens is very real. I haven't seen her in three years. A close friend’s daughter who worked in one of the towers is missing, her mother ended up in the hospital last night with an anxiety attack. We will pray for them all and we will meditate for peace but MOST IMPORTANTLY we will continue to support our country as Americans by forcing the economy to press on.
On Tuesday morning we got up and headed for work in Boston around 6:30 am. Our day was to be spent working in a warehouse outside of Boston building scenery. We had not listened to the radio on the drive in, we spent the morning enjoying each other’s company and talking excitedly about the prospect of a well paying job we were going to look at later that night in Boston. When we reached the town we stopped at McDonalds because I had to use the bathroom, while I was inside a friend of ours called the cell phone and asked if we had heard the news. Mr. D and I turned the radio on and for the next 45 minutes sat in disbelief, not knowing what to say to each other. We decided to go on to work as we had planned at that moment a case of not being able to figure out what else to do. No sooner did we get to the warehouse and set about building the tree then we received a phone call telling us that they had shut the building because of its close proximity to the Hancock Building and we were directed to go home. We left, avoiding driving through Boston. Later that day we had to return to Boston for another job. For that night and the next day, it was deserted, there was no traffic, very few people on the streets aside from the police and they were all wearing helmets. At night it has been silent except for what I have been told are F18 jets flying over us.
Today is Friday, September 14, 2001 and things have certainly changed for us as Americans. Those of us who are alive owe it to those who have passed from us to get up and fight for everything that America stands for. We owe it to them to celebrate our freedom and NEVER again take all that we have for granted. Do not let their deaths be in vain. We live in a country where we are free to worship as we choose, dress as we choose, read and listen to what we choose. Choose to get up and continue to live your lives, honor them by not running scared. Do not let those cowards win.
My wish for all of you is to be safe. Celebrate your lives each and every day. Smile and say hello to a stranger on the street. Pray, meditate, chant, do whatever it is that believe in doing –just do something!
Peace
Jenna aka Ig Chick
