They don't need to give them away at fairs or sell them for $3.oo, they have their own problems......like the millions of unwanted dogs and cats that are put down each year because of uneducated owners allow their dogs and cats to run free and breed unwanted puppies and kittens. This problem has been around for ever, although HS tries to educate the public.....they can't reach everyone....wheither John Q public wants to learn or not.
For every 10 we attempt to educate on iguana care and facts of having these large reptiles, we would be lucky that 50% would honestly follow any or part of the information. It's sad.....but it's the truth. Some people just flat out don't care, others just need a little push in the right direction.
I've always been behind banning imports and I still strongly believe in it. In this day and age.....95% of any reptile offered to the hobbyist, can be bred in captivity and doesn't need to be WC. So why do they focus on WC....it's cheaper! They don't have to feed them, raise them or work at breeding them.....they want "0" maintenance on these reptiles and 100 to 400% profit! The rarer it is, the better...(not all dealers, but a good chunk) operate this way. Let's face it, money is as important in this world.......as the sun or water we drink!!
On average.....does the majority of the U.S. population worry about what things will be like 100 years from now? Hardly.....they're only worried about making a profit so they don't have to work anymore....if this means cutting down every last tree in the world to make that money......so be it. If it means stripping the land to make a profit......so be it. Hey......animals are no different......we've been killing them off for 100's of years.......it's just gotten to the point now.....we've pushed them to where they can't find anymore open space to run to (we're populating that too).
So with all that off my chest.....what's the answer? For me......I'll just continue to offer as much as I can to educate.....and I will NOT purchase WC animals. I am ME.....and I just hope there's more people out there who feel like I do and will pass the word to as many who will listen as possible.
On the request by HS....I'm not for it or against it, due to not agreeing with all of it. But I would like to see more control over what comes into this country. If they don't shut it down completely, they should at least put strong regulations on the imports and exports in this country.
