i like the way the petition is worded ... in part, it asks "... that the government make reptile husbandry education and sanitary practices a priority. ..."
i do think that the HSUS's report has done some manipulation of facts ~ but i find it hard to disagree with the point that there is ALOT of inhumane treatment of reptiles ...
and as was previously stated, the HSUS's PRIMARY CONCERN IS FOR THE ANIMALS ~ so while i may disagree with some of their methods, i applaud their intent AND their efforts ...
the same as most of us on this forum, they are trying to make life better for igs (+ other herps) ...
would it not make more sense for us to be working TOGETHER instead of against each other??
i DO think that the bottom line best answer is **EDUCATION** ...
salmonella is SOOOOOO preventable for goddess sakes! *WE* know that, but the MAJORITY of people "out there" DO NOT ... even the health care professionals i work with freak out when they learn i have a large iguana that i *didn't* get rid of when i got grandkids ... now if doctors and nurses don't know how preventable salmonella is, how can we expect the rest of the people to know!?!?
instead of bashing the HSUS, we should be using this as a wake up call and get active, even in some small way, to start EDUCATING people ~ about salmonella, about the fact that baby igs do NOT deserve the horrors of being given away as prizes at fairs or sold for $3 on boardwalks ... no one would THINK of doing that with puppies or kittens! why not??? because of alot of hard work and education ~ to a large extent by the HSUS ... we need to be vocal and active in educating people on PROPER husbandry issues ...
i love iZ with all my heart, i wouldn't have missed knowing him for ANYthing, it has been a unique privilege to be a part of his life ... but i feel guilt on a regualr basis that he never had the life that he was intended to have ~ high up in a nice warm tree, basking in the sunshine to his little green heart's content ... the bottom line for me is that i truly believe that wild animals should not be kept in captivity ...
ok, my point here is ~
we all have very different opinions, some of us are a one-ig person, some have an entire zoo of herps ... but the thing we SHOULD have in common is that WE CARE ABOUT THE ANIMALS THEMSELVES ~ PERIOD! and for us to accomplish anything, we NEED to focus on what we DO agree on ...
the hell with *my* "rights" to go buy a $3 boardwalk ig ~ what about the IG'S RIGHTS to live and be happy and healthy???? and that IS the point! THAT is what we need to work on, REALLY WORK ON ~ not how it's going to affect *us*, but how is it going to affect the IGS ... what is good for THEM????
Bon.
