You mean he has been under constant lighting even at night for 3 years? He'll thank you for getting the lights to go off at night, believe me!
A timer is a piece of cake! I use 2 of them-- one for my UV light and basking lights...the other for my night heat. You just plug your lights or a power strip into them and plug them directly into the wall (after setting it to the current time, and setting the on/off times). Remember, 12 hours on, 12 hours off (I actually have my lights on for 13 hours so I can spend more time with him at night).
Anyway, make sure you have a UV light (Zoomed 5 or an Active UV) For the night, you can use a ceramic bulb that gives off no light or a very dark night bulb (ESU makes a nice dark one).
