Scared Little Ig

Hi guys!!
My little ig is scared of me. Is it because it is still young? (SNT = 17"). When I approach it, it goes crazy and scatters all over the place. But when I finally have it in the palm of my hands, it gets comfy and relaxes. How do I tame it? Tried hand feeding my little ig but doesn't seem to eat. Oh ya.. How do I tell the difference between a female and a male?
