Just hold him more times during the day for shorter periods if that is easier. Even my adult iguana doesn't stay put for long-- they have it in their head where they want to be and it usually isn't sitting in my lap!
I know something you can try...worked for me when he was young and freaky wild. After I gave him a bath, I would stay with him in the bathroom where it was warm (heat lamp) and put him up high on the towel rack with a towel on it. They feel safer up high. I would then pet and talk to him. To this day he loves towels and used to hide under them or between/behind them on the towel rack when he was scared. Also, if he escapes, the bathroom isn't too big so you can catch him (just double check under your cabinets to make sure there are no holes (mine had them)...you have to feel up underneath to find them. A coworker got hers stuck in there and he died (very sad).
Anyhoo, with this bathroom rack idea, you don't have to actually hold him which is the beauty of it all because he is more likely to sit still and get used to you! Good luck and let me know how it works out.
