: When I worked at a highrise, we'd have to test the airhandler unit on a regular bases for basteria. There's a type that grows in lower temps in the condensation pans of cooling units and can spread to the cooling coils. Once this happens, people can get ill from the air being pumped into the office areas.

You are probably refering to Legionella. The bacterium was discovered in the air conditioning units of a hotel where a number of Legionnaires attending a conference acquired a mysterious and deadly pneumonia. It happened in the 70's if I recall.
