Since we take in iguans in varied states of health, I have found that calcium is a must have for us to kep on hand. Like your question, I was very concerned with hypervitaminosis and hypercalcemia. The truth is, compared to MBD those conditins are very rarely seen. When they are seen, it is from keepers who are usually very on top of their care requirements because they figure if some is good, more is better.
In particular we are usually dealing with really sick igs here and so while I use D3 and calcium, I don't preach what I practice as a rule. There are just too many things that can go wrong using some tools and it is my feeling that if the iguana needs D3 and/or calcium they should be under the care of a qualified vet. I am a firm believer that if you are feeding a good diet there is no need for supplements.
I addressed the toxic issues with liquid D3 in a post not too long ago. Yes, it is possible that an iguana can die from too much liquid D3. That is the reason I personally do not advocate its use even though I have used it on iguanas with MBD.
Some iguanas can assimilate powders, some can't. Like with most things when it comes to iguanas I've yet to find anyone who can give me a concrete why or why not answer. When I have used anything in a powdered or crushed form, I usually mix it into the food I am serving to make sure that they are at least eating it.
