It is normal for an iguana to shed the skin on the spikes but not the spikes. If the spikes themsleves are coming off it is because of shed build-up on the spikes or poor nutrican. Usually spikes will regenerate unless something pulled them all of it loose.
If the problem is shed build up, try tub soaking with a wash cloth on the back. Also, being in the sun with a garden hose with pin holes may help. A short rain will really help mine when the spikes are shedding.
Many of us "help" with the spike shedding. LOL
