Iguanas aren't built to handle animal protein. Period.

There is still a LOT of misinformation floating around out there and the only way to learn is to ask questions....Good for you for giving this so much thought, Anna.

There have been people that have suggested that, as juveniles, iguanas ate animal protein. The exact term for this escapes me at the moment. Latest research states that, regardless of age, iguanas do not, or more appropriately, SHOULD not eat animal protein. Their bodies simply aren't designed to process it.

It IS thought that juveniles need larger amounts of protein for growth. There are plant sources that can provide sufficient amounts of protein. At 3 a.m. the list escapes me but, if nothing else, check the Melissa Kaplan/Jen Swofford sites for lists and/or cross reference the USDA nutritional info site.

I'm sure someone else will be able to point you in the right direction for plant protein as I can't seem to remember my own name at the moment....;)
