Strange pooping behavior...confused

My ig is not potty trained. He goes on a particular spot in his enclosure. But instead of just pooping on the newspaper, he crawls under the newspaper to go. He has been doing this for a long time. And another thing he did was change where he goes to the bathroom. When I moved him into his bigger cage, he always went to the bathroom on the far right hand side of the cage. Then one day he went on the far left side of the cage, and that has been his spot ever since. My question is, is this just his personality and weird behavior, or do you think there is a reason for him digging under the paper to go to the bathroom?
