: These mites are Hirstiella trombidiiformis can be black or red.
: The blackened demarcations to this iguanas scales are inflammation/damage caused by mites. I read somewhere this discoloration occurs when the mite saliva mixes with the blood of its host when mite feeds, causing some kind of alteration/damage to the cells.
: The black scales your iguana has can be from either a history of having mites (which imports are notorious for having), or just the natural coloration of maturity coming in.
: Usually the blackened scale damage from mite feeding is raised or pitted, irregular in appearance than the other scales, can have a dead "necrotic" dried shriveled appearance too.
Do the black scales ever turn back to green? I am nursing a recently found iguana who has mites and I have noticed his one side is black but the other is green. Help if you can. Steph.
