In Reply to: Rhino Iguana's enclosure...please look posted by Dan on August 14, 2001 at 23:10:48:
When my now 8mos old Rhino was just 3 months old I found out what fantastic escape artists they can be. The height of his tank was 2feet with only his food dish, slate rock area a couplea small logs not even 2-4 " in height for any of these items caused me to custom cover it with vinyl coated screen mesh. They can LEAP! and use that tail as a pole vault I swear. He uses the food dish, rocks, for added leverage. He is so dang smart he analyses the screen almost everyday trying to figure out if anything has moved, changed so he can jump at it and figure out a way to split. You can downright see his little wheels moving!
If the enclosure is wood...you'll need to keep claws trimmed weekly. The sharp barbs dig into any soft wood like plywood and my Cuban had literally scaled my patio block wall one day. Even after trimming her claws it amazes me to see she STILL could climb that block wall but not to where she got very far up it. At any rate...to be on the safe side...KEEP IT COVERED! If your enclosure is made of say vinyl or plexiglass something real slick...then I'd say yeah go for it 3.5-4 ft high all slick interior....I used to use an old above ground swimming pool for my 5 ft+ green iggies play pen area for outside. It was 4 feet high slick vinyl...never could get out of it...but then my female figured out how she could dig under it! Oy vey!! Probrems! Cover all your bases sit back and watch those wheels move...and troubleshoot along the way.
